MINERS OUTLAST FREEDOM, 6-4

web_block1FLORENCE, Ky. - The Miners won their second consecutive game in Florence with a 6-4 victory over the Freedom on Monday. The game, originally scheduled to start at 10:05 a.m. was delayed 3 hours and 27 minutes before the first pitch.

Will Block and the Miners offense were ready to go when the rain subsided. Block hit his second home run in as many days as part of a three-run second inning to give the Miners a 3-0 lead. Block later homered in the ninth to give him five on the season, a new career high. He also had a double in the game.

Ryan Zink was tremendous, retiring 19 consecutive batters after surrendering a leadoff single in the first inning. He allowed a two-run homer in the seventh but stayed in to finish the inning. He left with one out in the eighth and picked up the win to run his record to 3-0 on the year.

The Miners took a 4-0 lead in the fourth inning on Eric Suttle’s RBI single. He had two hits and two walks in the game. Jereme Milons also recorded a pair of hits and a pair of RBIs, including an RBI single to cap off a two run-ninth inning that extended the Miners cushion to 6-2.

Erik Draxton entered in the ninth inning with a 6-2 lead and surrendered a Stephen Shults two-run home run off the scoreboard in left field before recording the final out. Draxton struck out two batters in his one inning of work.

Former Freedom pitcher Ben Shivers celebrated his 24th birthday by facing two batters in the eighth inning and retiring them both.

On Tuesday the Miners will try for the sweep when Sean Teague takes the hill against Alec Lewis for the Freedom. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. Central Time.
