The Southern Illinois Miners announce that Chance Shepard will represent the team in the 2018 Frontier League Home Run Derby at CarShield Field in O'Fallon, Missouri on Tuesday, July 10th.
Shepard owns 14 home runs on the season, ranking second in the Frontier League as of July 8th. He will compete alongside some of the league's most-powerful bats, including Travis Harrison (Evansville), Jacob Wark (Florence), Trae Santos (Gateway), Chris Iriart (Normal), Paul Kronenfeld (River City), Will Kengor (Traverse City) and Roman Collins (Washington). Each hitter will get to hit as many home runs as possible in 90 seconds, with the top-four advancing to the second round, and the top-two hitters in that round moving on to the finals.
The hitter with the most homers in the finals will represent the Frontier League and compete against the winner of the competition between four former St. Louis Cardinals players- Mark Whiten, Jim Edmonds, Ray Lankford and Rick Ankiel. The former Redbirds will compete against each other in a two-round derby to determine who faces off against the Frontier League's representative.
Southern Illinois will look to bounce back in a doubleheader against Windy City to close out their schedule before the all-star break tomorrow afternoon. Kurt Heyer will pitch in game one against Windy City's Jake Welch at 3:30 p.m., with the second contest featuring Aaron Rozek for the Miners and Connor Bach for the ThunderBolts.
The Southern Illinois Miners are the Frontier League's winningest franchise since debuting in 2007, winning the 2012 Frontier League Championship as well as division titles in 2010, 2014, 2015 and 2016. They have been awarded the Frontier League Organization of the Year award three times since their inception, and also set a new Frontier League attendance record in their inaugural season.
