The Southern Illinois Miners dropped both games of their doubleheader on Sunday evening against the Windy City ThunderBolts at Rent One Park by 6-1 and 6-0 final scores, as the visitors swept the weekend series and sent the Miners to their fourth and fifth straight defeats.
In the first game, the ThunderBolts again scored in the top of the first inning, loading the bases against Kurt Heyer before a sacrifice fly by Tyler Straub made it 1-0. The Miners got their leadoff man on base in each of the first two innings on walks by ThunderBolts starter Jake Welch (4-2), but they could not score, and Windy City widened their lead to 4-0 with three runs before an out was made in the third inning. They also added on two more runs in the seventh for a 6-0 lead. In the bottom of the inning, an RBI single by Kyle Davis got Southern Illinois on the board, part of a four-hit rally with two outs in the inning, but they could not get closer.
In game two, both Aaron Rozek and Connor Bach (2-1) did not allow a baserunner in the first two innings. But the Windy City offense again cashed in a multiple-run inning in the top of the third inning on a bases-clearing double by Tim Zier and a two-out error that allowed Zier to score from third base to make it 4-0. The ThunderBolts got two more runs in the next inning on RBI hits by Jonathan McCray and Ronnie Healy for the final 6-0 margin. Bach struck out 10 batters and allowed just one hit and two walks over six innings as Southern Illinois was shut out in the finale.
After the all-star break, the Miners open the second half of their season on the road in Florence against the Florence Freedom on Friday night, July 13th at 6:05 p.m. They return home the following Tuesday to host the Schaumburg Boomers on July 17th at Rent One Park
